International Online Congress: Geoethics & Groundwater Management: Theory and Practice for a Sustainable Development
Porto (Portugal)
A joint event IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics and IAH - International Association of Hydrogeologists.
Important news due to the Covid-19 (posted on 9 April 2020):
https://iapgeoethics.blogspot.com/2020/04/news-geoethics-groundwater-management.html
Description: Natural resources of our planet are among the main topics of interest for geoethics. Referring to surface and groundwater management, geoethics promotes a prudent and responsible use, and recycling wherever possible, fostering key concepts like sustainability, respect for natural dynamics, and preservation from pollution. In this perspective, geoscientists are called to disseminate correct information on the best way to manage water resources for the benefit of society, and to sensitize public opinion about the active contribution the population can give to the conservation of water in order to avoid the depletion of this essential resource for the life on the planet.
From 2012 the IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics (www.geoethics.org) works for orienting geoscientists towards an ethical approach to water resources. This implies to analyse scientifically the dynamics of human-water systems, to manage carefully problems related to environmental impacts created by human intervention in the natural processes governing surface and groundwater resources, to develop strategies in order to harmonize expectations and requests of various stakeholders, including citizens, industry and policy makers.
The joint congress IAH - IAPG will be an excellent occasion for discussing and sharing values, best practices and strategies to manage water resources for a sustainable future.

HEGC-1 - First Himalayan Engineering Geological Congress
Kathmandu (Nepal)
IAPG Special Session: Geoethics in Engineering Geology: doing the right thing while managing the geological environment
Convener: Ranjan Kumar Dahal (IAPG-Nepal co-coordinator).
Description: IAEG defines “Engineering Geology” as “the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of the engineering and environmental problems which may arise as the result of the interaction between geology and the works and activities of man as well as to the prediction and of the development of measures for prevention or remediation of geological hazards”. This definition implies evident ethical and social implications in geo-engineering research and practice. In fact, the interaction man-Earth system produces surely modifications in natural dynamics and equilibria, so managing the natural/geological environment requires great responsibilities by scientists, practitioners and industry in order to minimize the impact on ecosystems, to use geo-resources prudently, to protect the geoheritage and geodiversity, to respect local populations and their cultures. In addition, engineering geology is a fundamental discipline to help society to face natural hazards, to reduce geo-risks and to improve the societal resilience, through accurate scientific studies and effective geoengineering design. Geo-education campaigns and communication to population should be considered as fundamental collateral activities and a real social duty of every scientific activity. This session will collect abstracts discussing ethical and social aspects in engineering geology, from theoretical to practical issues, including case-studies.

International Conference on Geoscience for Society
Segunbagicha, Dhaka (Bangladesh)
Development of urbanization, industrialization and civilization as a whole depend on earth resources like mineral, water and soil. These resources come from earth's components- atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere and biosphere - the Earth System Science. But any change of these components causes geo-hazards which may even ruin the entire civilization. These all are subject matters of geosciences or earth sciences. Geosciences is an intuitive and constantly changing science, and therefore geoscientists must have up to date knowledge of this field and a good concept of earth's components, earth resources and geo-hazards to discover hidden resources, utilize those resources properly and deal with hazardous impacts on society efficiently. This is possible by carrying out extensive research on these areas and applying the research findings for the welfare of the society. So, the objectives of GeoSoc-2019 are as usual to gather innovative ideas and information from geoscientists involved worldwide with earth and earth resources, development activities, geo-hazard, environmental ecosystems and geoeducation.
Themes: Geoscience Education, Geo-Resources, Energy and Mineral based Industries, Geosciences in Developing Activities and Disaster Risk Reduction, Women in Geosciences.
IAPG - International Association for Promoting Geoethics is partner geoscience organization of GeoSoc 2019.

IAPG-USA and AGI co-organize the Session ED13D (Posters): Geoethics: Taking a Stand for Ethical Geoscience Research, Education, Communication, and Practice (10 December 2018, 13:40 - 18:00, Walter E Washington Convention Center - Hall A-C (Poster Hall)).
Convenership: Cindy Palinkas (primary convener; IAPG-USA co-chair), Vincent S. Cronin (IAPG-USA co-chair), Silvia Peppoloni (IAPG Secretary General), Chris Keane (AGI).
Session Description: There is a clear need to develop ethical frameworks within which geoscientists can conduct their research, professional, education, and outreach activities. Geoethics deals with the ethical, social and cultural implications of geoscience research and practice, and so provides these frameworks in a variety of settings. For example, as scholars and experts in earth sciences, geoscientists are required to conduct research responsibly and to inform society of potential geological hazards and possible sustainable resources. As educators, they should train students in ethical practices. In all activities, they should exemplify ethical behaviors and attitudes as they interact with colleagues and students in the work environment (including offices, classrooms, labs, and the field) and seek to increase diversity and inclusion. The goal of this session is to discuss these frameworks, considering both theoretical and practical aspects. We invite contributions focusing on the ethical aspects of geoscience research, practice and education, including case studies.

Earth System Governance Conference 2018
Utrecht (Netherlands)
The Earth System Governance project is a ten-year-old global project and network of mainly and social and political scientists; interfaces of their interests with geoethics are many. About 400 people gathered there, among them Martin Bohle (IAPG Board of Experts), who together with Cornelia E. Nauen (speaker, Mundus Maris) and Eduardo Marone (IAPG-Brazil coordinator) made a contribution to a panel on "ocean governance". Their paper “Not out of the blue: Ethics to Intersect Civic Participation and Formal Guidance” (download slides) draws also on geoethics. They argue that ethical frameworks (such as geoethics), civic participation and formalized guidance are features of socio-ecological systems, which support each other and that, togeher are essential for the governability of building the human niche.

Joint Congress SGI-SIMP
Catania (Italy)
89th Congress of the Geological Society of Italy, jointly with the Italian Society of Mineralogy and Petrography
Session S38: "History of geosciences and Geoethics: the right way for social responsibility"
Conveners: Marco Pantaloni (ISPRA-Roma), Silvia Peppoloni (INGV, Roma), Fabiana Console (ISPRA, Roma), Giuseppe Di Capua (INGV, Roma).
Session description: What cultural heritage have we received from the geologists of the past? What value references, insights, ethical guidelines can be recovered? What is the social value of geological knowledge? The history of geosciences is an indispensable starting point for understanding the scientific and cultural climate in which the reference values of the Italian geology matured, the geological thought that accompanied its development and which today, like a red thread, binds us to our past. Geoethics deals with the ethical, social and cultural aspects related to geosciences. One of its objectives is to improve the quality of geological research and practice, enhancing the role of the geologist and emphasizing his/her responsibilities in making decisions that may have repercussions on the natural, social and economic balance of a territory. In recent years the interest in these aspects of the geological activity has grown considerably, also in relation to the increasing urgency of the global challenges that affect our planet (from geological risks to the use of geo-resources, from climate changes to the reduction of pollution) and which require the involvement of geologists, as experts of the territory and its processes. For these reasons, today it is essential to develop a reflection on the cultural and historical identity of the geological sciences, with reference to the knowledge and consciousness of the national territory, its resources and evolution, by deepening the ethical, historical, social and cultural aspects of geosciences, both in practical and theoretical terms, including case studies. The session is jointly organized by the sections of "History of Geosciences" and of "Geoethics and Geological Culture" of the Italian Geological Society, and is promoted by INHIGEO (International Commission on the History of Geological Sciences - www.inhigeo.com) and the IAPG (International Association for Promoting Geoethics - www.geoethics.org).

36th General Assembly of the European Seismological Commission
Session S40: "Seismology and Society"
Conveners: Nicos Melis (Greece), Remy Bossu (France), Silvia Peppoloni (Italy), Giuseppe di Capua (Italy), Iain Stewart (United Kingdom), Graça Silveira (Portugal), Susana Custódio (Portugal), Tataru Dragos (Romania), Paul Denton (United Kingdom).
Session description: This session aims to bring together seismologists working in the fields of educational seismology, citizen seismology and geoethics. The common theme being the process of communicating the science of seismology to non-specialists. Seismology has an important role to play in modern society and seismologists should be having two-way communications with a wide variety of stakeholders across all levels of society, encompassing schools, engineers, general public, other scientists, politicians and civil protection professionals. In educational seismology projects across the world practical studies of seismology can be used to enhance the scientific literacy not just within the school but also within the wider community through family interactions. Nowadays non-specialist citizens are becoming increasingly involved with the collection and dissemination of seismological information through a growing number of citizen seismology networks, maybe by reporting directly or indirectly felt effects or by instrument based programmes. This session aims to promote the discussion on social aspects involved in seismic risk communication and (geo)ethical implications. Improving the relationships between scientists, decision makers, and general public means to increase the resilience of the human communities, and to make seismologists more aware of the responsibility in conducting their activity.
This session is supported by IAPG.

Town Hall meeting (Tuesday, February 13, 2018 06:30 PM - 07:30 PM, Oregon Convention Center - E143-E144):
GeoEthics and the Responsible Conduct of Scientists as Professionals and Educators
Convenership: Cindy M. Palinkas and Elizabeth S. Gordon
Description: The concept of GeoEthics, the ethical, social and cultural implications of geoscience research and practice, is gaining traction within the geoscience community and provides a framework for exploring our ethical obligations as scientists and educators. This session examines our behaviors and attitudes as we interact with colleagues and students in the work environment, broadly defined to include offices, classrooms, labs, and the field, the latter of which is especially relevant for ocean scientists involved in long-term field deployments. It will also explore our obligations and obstacles to communicate information to the public, particularly in a charged political environment.
This will be an interactive town hall, inviting participants to discuss such issues as bullying, sexual harassment, and/or other coercive or abusive behaviors, as well as efforts to increase diversity and inclusion. Discussions may examine principles, case studies, and/or strategies to address these issues and may involve many interactions encountered by scientists throughout their careers (e.g. supervisor-worker, faculty-student, editor-author, individual-team).

Seminar on Geoethics
Bozeman, MT (USA)
Montana State University, 4:30 – 5:20 pm, Gaines Hall 243
Seminar "Geoethics" by David Mogk (IAPG Board of Experts)
Description: Ethics is an increasingly important component of the pre-professional training of (geo)scientists. Funding agencies (NSF, NIH) require training of graduate students in the responsible conduct of research, employers are increasingly expecting their workers to have basic training in ethics, and the public demands the highest standards of ethical conduct by scientists. Geoethics resides at the intersection of geoscience, philosophy, economics and sociology, and encompasses the values and professional standards required of geoscientists to responsibly work in the profession and in service to society. Many dimensions of geoethics will be addressed: 1) Geoethics and self (self-monitoring and self-regulating behaviors); 2) Geoethics and the Geoscience Profession (responsible conduct of research and professional behaviors); 3) Geoethics and Society (responsible interactions in communicating scientific information and uncertainty to the public); and 4) Geoethics and Earth (geoscientists' responsibilities to be good stewards of the Earth). The nature of geoscience research in the heterogeneous, dynamic and complex Earth system, and while working in challenging environments that can lead to interpersonal conflicts, opens the possibility for geoscientists to encounter all manner of ethical dilemmas. An "ethical decision-making toolkit" will be presented to help geoscientists recognize, prevent, mitigate, or act upon emerging ethical issues. A number of case studies will be presented to provide examples of the types of ethical dilemmas that might be encountered in the geoscience work environment.

2016 Ocean Sciences Meeting
New Orleans, Louisiana (USA)
Session:
ED44A: Ethical principles and practices in the Ocean Sciences
Convenership: Elizabeth S. Gordon (Fitchburg State University, USA) and Cindy M. Palinkas (University of Maryland, USA, and co-coordinator of the IAPG-USA section).
This session is supported by the IAPG.
Session description: Geoethics is an interdisciplinary study that encompasses professional ethics and scientific integrity, stewardship, and risk communication. As such, Geoethics provides a valuable framework for exploring our ethical obligations as ocean scientists in a variety of settings. As scholars and experts, we have an obligation to not only conduct research responsibly but also to inform society of potential marine resources and hazards. For example, ocean scientists are uniquely suited to address such issues as tsunami warnings, overfishing, iron fertilization, and ocean pollution, informing science-based management and policy decisions. As educators, we also have an obligation to train our students in ethical practices and principles. The goal of this session is to discuss these obligations through presentations that highlight case studies at the interface of marine science and ethics, as well as educational strategies for incorporating Geoethics into undergraduate and graduate curricula.

Geoethics and Critical Thinking in Undergraduate Geoscience Classes
Convenership: Dexter Perkins (University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, ND, United States), Vincent S Cronin (Baylor University, Geology, Waco, TX, United States and IAPG-USA co-coordinator) and David W. Mogk (Montana State Univ, Bozeman, MT, United States and IAPG Corresponding Citizen Scientist).
Session description: Ethical thinking and critical thinking are two intertwined skills that should be taught in all geoscience and engineering programs. These highly necessary skills will serve our students and society well, regardless of what students do after college. Yet, for the most part, ethics and critical thinking are only indirectly addressed in geocurricula. Furthermore, few faculty have the requisite training or resources to effectively teach these topics. So, department/programs need to be more intentional and there is great need for resources to support instruction. We invite researchers, educators, lifelong learners, and practitioners to submit papers that address the importance of teaching these skills, how they can be built into geocurricula and, perhaps most important, to share practical ideas and materials that can be used in our classrooms.
